About Us

The West Virginia Capitol Police was authorized by Chapter 42, Acts of the Legislature, 1999 Regular Session, as the Division of Protective Services. It was established within the Department of Homeland Security for the purpose of providing safety and security to individuals who visit, conduct business or work at the capitol complex and other state facilities.

The Capitol Police responds to Capitol Complex employee requests for emergency and nonemergency police services, investigates reported criminal violations, and assumes primary responsibility for policing the complex.

The agency director is appointed by the governor, by and with the advice and consent of the Senate.
