About Us

The West Virginia Capitol Complex is the seat of government for the State of West Virginia. The 18-acre campus hosts the West Virginia State Capitol​, home to all three branches of government, the West Virginia Executive Mansion​, and numerous other government buildings​. The campus also features the ​West Virginia State Museum, at the Culture Center, and the West Virginia Veterans Memorial


Providing for the security and safety of the Capitol Complex and its employees and visitors is a highly trained and professional law enforcement agency. The West Virginia Division of Protective Services, also known as the Capitol Police, was established by the Legislature in 1999 when it declared​ that "​citizens, state employees and visitors who park, attend functions, conduct business or work at the Capitol Complex and other state facilities should be safe and secure."

The agency is a branch of The WV Department of Homeland Security​
The Capitol Police responds to Capitol Complex employee requests for emergency and nonemergency police services, investigates reported criminal violations, and assumes primary responsibility for policing the complex. 
​The agency director is appointed by the governor, by and with the advice and consent of the Senate.

Kanawha County has 55 disaster sirens throughout Kanawha and Putnam Counties.
Four are located around the Capitol Complex. The sirens are tested at noon on the fourth Wednesday of every month. If you hear the sirens at any time other than the testing time tune into local news media for more information. Visit the KPEPC​ site for more.

The Capitol Police Command Center 

The Capitol Police Command Center operates and monitors multiple security systems, 24 hours a day and 365 days a year. It is the point of contact and dispatch for all law enforcement, emergency medical service, and fire response. The Command Center also coordinates contractor access and freight deliveries for the Capitol Complex.

The Division of Protective Services monitors and administers Card Access for multiple state agencies and Capitol Complex buildings, to ensure controlled access to vital and sensitive areas.

Capitol Dispensary
The Division of Protective Services also operates the Capitol Dispensary, which is staffed by a registered nurse. Visitors and employees may utilize basic services, and the nurse is also the first responder for emergency calls at the Capitol Complex. The Legislature's Doctor of the Day program provides additional medical care during sessions.

The School Safety Unit Mission Statement

The School Safety Unit within the Division of Protective Services shall primarily be charged to provide services to all public primary and secondary schools and may provide services to any private primary and secondary schools in the state upon request.
