The West Virginia Capitol Complex is the seat of government for the State of West Virginia. The 18-acre campus hosts the West Virginia State Capitol, home to all three branches of government, the West Virginia Executive Mansion, and numerous other government buildings. The campus also features the West Virginia State Museum, at the Culture Center, and the West Virginia Veterans Memorial.
Providing for the security and safety of the Capitol Complex and its employees and visitors is a highly trained and professional law enforcement agency. The West Virginia Division of Protective Services, also known as the Capitol Police, was established by the Legislature in 1999 when it declared that "citizens, state employees and visitors who park, attend functions, conduct business or work at the Capitol Complex and other state facilities should be safe and secure."
The agency is a branch of The WV Department of Homeland Security
The Capitol Police responds to Capitol Complex employee requests for emergency and nonemergency police services, investigates reported criminal violations, and assumes primary responsibility for policing the complex.
The agency director is appointed by the governor, by and with the advice and consent of the Senate.
